FAQs
Common questions
How much of my income can I insure?+
Insurers will typically cover 50–70% of your gross income, paid tax-free. The cap reflects the fact that statutory benefits and ongoing employer cover may also contribute. We'll model the realistic monthly figure you'd receive.
What's a deferred period?+
The waiting time between being unable to work and the policy starting to pay. Common options are 4, 8, 13, 26 or 52 weeks. Matching the deferred period to your employer's sick pay or savings buffer is the biggest single way to control premium cost.
Is 'own occupation' cover better?+
Usually, yes. 'Own occupation' pays out if you can't perform your specific job, rather than any job at all. Definitions vary by insurer and occupation class, so we compare carefully — particularly for skilled or specialist roles.
Can I get income protection if I'm self-employed?+
Yes — many insurers actively cater for self-employed and contractor applicants. We'll evidence your earnings using SA302s or accounts and position the application appropriately.
Does the policy pay out for stress or mental health?+
Most modern policies do cover mental health claims, which are now one of the most common reasons cover pays out. We'll flag insurers whose definitions and claims approach are strongest in this area.
