FAQs

Common questions

Is the Help to Buy equity loan still available?+

The original government Help to Buy equity loan scheme in England closed to new applicants in 2023. Shared ownership, Lifetime ISA, Right to Buy and developer-backed schemes all remain — and we'll help you work out which ones you qualify for.

How does shared ownership work?+

You buy a share of a property (typically 25–75%) with a mortgage on that share and pay rent on the remainder to a housing association. Over time you can 'staircase' — buying additional shares — until you own the property outright.

Can I use a Lifetime ISA toward my deposit?+

Yes. A Lifetime ISA lets eligible savers earn a 25% government bonus on contributions used to buy a first home worth up to £450,000. It can be combined with most first-time buyer mortgages.

Am I eligible for Right to Buy?+

Right to Buy is generally available to council tenants in England who have been a public-sector tenant for at least three years. Discount levels and rules vary by region, and we can help with the mortgage side once you have your offer letter.

Are there lenders who specialise in these schemes?+

Yes — not every lender does shared ownership or scheme-based lending, and criteria vary by scheme. We work with lenders who routinely fund these purchases and understand the supporting paperwork.
